Arusha National Park
Located just a short drive from the safari capital of northern Tanzania, Arusha National Park is one of the country’s most diverse and scenic protected areas. Although smaller than many famous Tanzanian parks, it offers an extraordinary variety of landscapes, wildlife, and activities within a compact area, making it a perfect introduction to the northern safari circuit.
The park lies at the foothills of the majestic Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and the fifth-highest in Africa. This dormant volcano dominates the park’s skyline and provides breathtaking scenery with lush forests, open grasslands, sparkling lakes, and dramatic volcanic craters. Mount Meru is also a popular trekking destination for adventurous travelers seeking a quieter alternative to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
One of the park’s most iconic features is the Momella Lakes, a chain of shallow alkaline lakes that vary in color from blue to green depending on the season and mineral content. These lakes attract a wide variety of waterbirds, including flamingos, pelicans, and herons, creating a paradise for bird lovers and photographers.
Another remarkable landmark is the Ngurdoto Crater, often referred to as the “Little Ngorongoro.” This lush volcanic crater is home to herds of buffalo, warthogs, and other wildlife that roam its grassy floor surrounded by steep forested walls.
Despite its relatively small size, Arusha National Park hosts a surprising diversity of wildlife. Visitors may encounter giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, bushbucks, waterbucks, and various primates including black-and-white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys. While large predators are rare, the park’s calm environment makes it ideal for relaxed wildlife viewing.
Arusha National Park is also one of the few places in Tanzania where visitors can enjoy walking safaris and canoeing safaris. Guided walking safaris allow travelers to explore the wilderness on foot with an armed ranger, offering a close connection to nature and the opportunity to observe animals, plants, and birds from a unique perspective.
